Online degrees psychology – Levels of education
There are several levels of education that you can receive when obtaining your psychology degree online. You basically have to ask yourself what sort of career you want, and how long you want to stay in school. A higher education and a better psychology degree online will no doubt improve your career and salary, but at the expense of up to 8 or more years in school.
Earning your psychology degree online follows the same steps as earning a traditional psychology degree. The normal progression is from a Bachelor degree, to a Master degree and then finally to a PhD. This is the same whether your program is online or in a classroom setting.
Online Degrees Psychology – Bachelor
The Bachelor of Psychology degree online comes in two different distinctions. You can choose the Bachelor of Arts in Psychology or the Bachelor of Science in Psychology. Basically, the biggest difference between these two programs is the amount of science versus liberal arts courses you take. So, if you excelled at science in high school, or if you have an interest in it, choose the Bachelor of Science in Psychology online degree. If not, go for the Arts. The jobs available to each are often similar, but with small, subtle distinctions.
Online Degrees Psychology – Masters
Moving from your Bachelor degree, you might decide that you want to pursue a Master degree in Psychology online. This usually takes about 1 or 2 years to complete, after the initial 3 or 4 in the Bachelor degree. This degree will give you distinction in a specific area of psychology, and many specialized careers such as child psychology and health psychology require a Master degree.
Online Degrees Psychology – Doctorate
You can end with the Master degree, or you can get the highest degree in North America available to Psychology majors: the PhD. This can take up to 4 to 8 years to complete, depending on whether you choose to accelerate your degree or not. The PhD offers a research-intensive education, and students will most likely enter the research field upon graduation, in a university lab setting for instance. If a student wants to become a clinical psychologist and open their own practice, they can choose to obtain a PsyD. This is similar to a PhD, but requires less research and more practical.
Psychology Career Paths
There are many careers open to psychology graduates. Whether your degree is a traditional psychology degree or a psychology degree online, you have credentials that will open doors. Most psychologists in most states require a PhD in order to practice, so it is a good idea to look into your state laws before considering this career path. Masters students can choose specialized aspects of psychology, such as child psychology, health psychology or counseling psychology. There are also plenty of university labs looking to hire innovative psychologists to run tests and research projects. Some large companies even hire a psychologist full-time to monitor the mental health of their employees. There are also psychology positions available working as a teacher, in a hospital or clinic, or a counseling center. A career in psychology is a great way to help others and learn a bit about human behavior, and getting your degree online can help you enter this field.
